5 Tips to Choosing the Right Curtain for your Home

where to buy curtains

You don’t really need to hire a home deco expert before you make the right choice for the type of curtain you need in your home. Whether you are living in a rented apartment or you just built your own home, curtains is one of the soft furnishings that can add to the beauty of your house. Yes, choosing curtains in a store is much more than just picking a fabric you like and hoping it looks good in your room. There are a million small factors that can go wrong in the selection of drapes for your space: Do they provide the right level of privacy? Are they high enough to hang the right way? Does their hanging style match the architecture of your home? All these and more are some critical factors to consider while making the choice

  1. Choose between curtain, drapes, blinds and Shades: Knowing the difference between these terms is the first stepin helping you make a choice. Curtains are fabric panels made of light materials and hang from curtain rods. They are mostly used for privacy purposes, making it perfect for living rooms. Whereas, drapes are made of thicker materials that are made to block out sunlight, making it ideal for bedrooms.
  2. Choose between washer machine friendly or Dry cleaning: There is a difference between laundry and dry cleaning and trying to choose  whether you’re going to buy dry-clean only or washer machine friendly curtains matters. This is because it will save you time and money in the long run. Keep in mind that you can ruin high-quality curtains by trying to wash them yourself instead of giving it out to a dry cleaning company
  3. Choose between fabric types: The type of fabric matters a lot in choosing the right kind of curtain. The two factors that you should consider while picking your fabric are the amount of sunlight you want to stream and the mood of the decor in the room. When it comes to material, linen, silk, faux silk and velvet are the best choices to use for window treatments since they tend to hang the best. Some fabrics can help keep out the cold. Many hotels use suede, velvet, tapestry or tweed since their weight helps block light and keep heat in.
  4. Choose the right colors: The colour of your curtains should ideally be in sync with the rest of the furnishings. You could either choose drapes that harmonise with the decor or contrast with it. For a pleasing look, choose drapes in a colour that complement the shade of your walls. Alternatively, if you want the curtain colours to be the focus, pick a hue that contrasts with the furniture and walls. Also, remember sunlight will fade fabrics over time. If the room in question gets a lot of light, it’s smart to avoid bright colors, since they tend to fade faster.
  5. Choose the ideal dimension: Before you take out the tape measure, decide how high above the window you’d like the curtains to begin. Designers often hang curtains about six inches above the window frame, but for a dramatic look, some go higher. Curtains that fall exactly to the floor level are in vogue. For a more dramatic look, you can opt for a curtain size that is longer by a few inches, so that the drapes puddle on the floor. On the other hand, if you have kids, you are better off with curtains a couple of inches above the floor. Ending them at the sill for smaller windows is yet another classic option, but full-length drapes could work equally well.
